We have had our chickens now since last Spring and I must say that we have thoroughly enjoyed them! We love having a reason to go outside each day to care for them and the kids get so excited to see how many eggs there will be. We haven't bought eggs since last August with only 3 laying hens. We don't have roosters so they are very quiet but someday we will have to do a homeschool science project and get an incubator and hatch some of our own. I am sure the kids would love it. Paul built them this beautiful coop with nesting boxes, windows so they don't get too depressed, perches, and an indoor heating lamp. They say if you keep them happy they will continue to lay an egg a day even in the winter - and ours have indeed. We let them out to wander the property almost daily and since they are so tame we have no problem getting them back in the coop at night. Marissa picks them up and carries them all over the place and they follow us around when we are outside. We have even caught them standing on our deck staring in the sliding glass door at us. Since we have an overload of eggs right now we will be using our own eggs to boil and decorate this Easter.

I am totally inspired now. We really want to get some hens but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Mainly because we need a place for them to roost and be at night. The battle for time . . . hopefully soon.
